Your website/Your own domain

Your own domain

Put your website on a domain you already own, like yourbusiness.co.uk, with your Gillie address sending visitors there.

If you own a domain, like yourbusiness.co.uk, your website can live there instead of on its Gillie address. Anglers who visit your domain, with or without www, see your website, and your Gillie address sends them to the same page there. Your own domain comes with Gillie Pro.

Connect your domain

Only the owner or an admin can do this. You’ll need to sign in where you bought your domain, like GoDaddy, 123 Reg or IONOS.

  1. Go to Settings, then Website. On a phone, Settings is under More.
  2. Under Your own domain, type it in Your domain and tap Connect domain.
  3. Sign in where you bought your domain and open its DNS settings.
  4. Add each record Gillie shows, with its Type, Name and Value. Copy each value with the button beside it. Where the name is @, you can leave it blank.
  5. Come back and tap Check now, or leave it: Gillie keeps checking for you.

The TXT record named _gillie shows the domain is yours, and the two CNAME records point your domain and its www at your website. If a record with the same name is already there, change it rather than adding a second. Leave your email (MX) records as they are. Some places won’t take a CNAME record named @; if yours won’t, get in touch and we’ll help you move your DNS somewhere that does.

What to expect

While Gillie waits, the card says Waiting for your domain. It usually works within an hour, though DNS changes can take longer.

When it works, the card says Connected and we email you. Your domain becomes your website’s main address, and search engines are told the move is for good. Once Gillie has seen the TXT record, it drops off the list, and you can remove it where you bought your domain.

If it doesn’t connect

If Gillie can’t find the records after a day, it stops looking and the card says Records not found. Check each record matches exactly, then tap Check again.

If Gillie says another business has your domain, get in touch and we’ll sort it out.

If it stops working

Gillie checks your domain every day. If its records stop pointing at Gillie, your website goes back to its Gillie address so it never goes missing, and we email you. The card says Stopped working and shows the records again. Put them back and it switches over by itself, or tap Check again.

If you leave Pro

Your domain stays connected but paused, and visitors go to your Gillie address. Move to Pro to use it again.

Remove your domain

Tap Remove domain and confirm. Your Gillie address is your main address again straight away. You can have one domain of your own at a time, so remove one before connecting another.

If your domain had a website before, people may still have links to its old pages. Once your domain is on Gillie, use Links from your old website on the same page to send each old address to the right page here. Old links that went nowhere shows the ones people have tried.
